Plea for ideas The normal
Dec. 2nd, 2019 11:00 amI've not been near Dreamwidth for ages, largely because of device problems, and it's even longer since I posted, but now I am stuck with a problem and could really use some help.
Not surprisingly it involves the late 5th century. It's been lurking at the back of my mind for ages but now I've got to confront it:
Why did Ælle have all the inhabitants of Anderida massacred?
The normal procedure at the time would have been to enslave them. Why kill them? What could they have done to provoke a reaction like that? It would appear that the consequence of the victory at Mearcredesburna there was peace in the area. Who controlled Anderida? Why risk a major conflict? Had they done something that Ælle found unforgivable?
It's probably important to bear in mind that Ælle became the first Bretwalda (whatever that meant exactly; it seems to have been something like Imperator).
